The fascinating story of the Berlin club culture
The Berlin techno scene is renowned worldwide for its music, the atmosphere of its clubs, and for its endless parties.
Techno took off in Berlin in the early 90s, just after the fall of the wall.
During our Berlin techno tour, you will come to understand how the city became the capital of techno, locate its famous clubs, learn about their history and atmosphere, and explore all the hidden locations, which have much to offer in terms of musical and dancing experiences.
Berlin techno tour by Berlin like a local
The idea is not go partying together! I am sure you will manage this very well on your own, especially after being on my Berlin techno tour. The goal of my guided Berlin club culture tour is to present you the city from the perspective of its musical and festive scene: the Berlin techno scene.
Who should come on my Berlin techno tour?
Are you in, or do you plan to be in, Berlin for the first time? Or have you come here on many occasions already? Do you live in Berlin? In all of these cases, my Berlin techno tour is ideal for you, whether you are a big fan of electronic music and techno or if you are merely interested in the subject and want to know more about the last important counter-culture movement born in Berlin.
To be fully flexible in listening to your wishes and questions, I offer my tours exclusively as private tours. Whether you are alone, in a couple, with friends, or with any other type of group (such as a school or company group), you can rest assured that there will be no one else but you and/or your group on the tour. The Berlin techno tour will be exclusively for you.
Why a guided Berlin techno tour?
Electronic music has been part of my life for a long time, even since before I made the decision to move to Berlin. I experienced this sound for the first time when I was living in London in the 90's. I was convinced that when I moved to Berlin, I would not be disappointed by its techno scene – and I was right. It is amazing to discover the energy and the scale of the techno music scene in the German Capital. The scene consists of its famous clubs as well as others less known, and includes all the events around it. It is extremely active, lively, always changing, and undergoing constant evolution. During the Berlin techno tour, I will want to share with you part of my personal experience which I have been living since I moved here.
As for each of my guided tours, I take the time and the care to study the topic in depth so that I can show it and present it to you with all of its aspects in a concise manner and answer all of your questions. I am especially careful that this Berlin club culture tour is adjusted to your group, your rhythm, and whatever your cultural desires are.
What will we discuss during the Berlin techno tour?
One of the main questions you might be asking yourself is why Berlin has become a capital of techno music at the international level. What makes the techno scene fully part of the cultural atmosphere of the city, and to what extent? How did the techno movement survive and manage to renew itself and continue to offer us new locations, each more unusual and exciting than the last?
The history and evolution of the Berlin techno scene over the last 30 years
The city of Berlin is heavily marked by history, and this has had a direct impact on its artistic and musical life. You will discover all about it during my Berlin club culture tour.
The origins of techno in Berlin
Before Techno, a lot of other counter-culture movements characterized the German capital, such as the punk culture and squat culture in the 70's. For techno, it all starts in Detroit in the US. In Germany, the first city to show interest in techno music was Frankfurt am Main. During our Berlin techno tour, we will explore the combination of technological, sociological, and political factors which have led to a real boom of the techno scene in Berlin. At the beginning, a lot of people might have thought that techno music would not last and would be an ephemeral movement.
The musical techno scene which will last for a long time
Today, we must realize that not only has techno surged from the underground universe of its beginnings, but that it has established itself as a lasting piece of the artistic and musical scene worldwide. Berlin and its inhabitants have played a strong role in this, as have people from all over Germany, Europe, and around the world. From those who come for a party or a weekend on the Berlin dance floors for an electronic holiday, to those who decide to settle down in the city and become actors themselves and participate to the Berlin club culture, it is the people who also make the techno scene so lively and surprising. Sometimes the locations change; some clubs close, some open in a new place under the same name or another name, others simply newly open. You will discover a mix of these magical locations, past and present, during this fascinating Berlin techno tour.
The main events that marked the Berlin techno scene
There are three major events which have marked the rise of the Berlin techno scene: the Tekknozid parties, the Mayday, and the Love Parade.
The first rave parties in Germany, called Tekknozid, were organized in Berlin, and to be more specific, in East Berlin. After a few events, Berliners discovered this new sound: the techno sound and its festive atmosphere. The public participation grew from 400 participants to more than 3000 within less than a year. During our Berlin techno tour, you will go to the location of these events, an historic location which is sure to surprise you -- this is the location of the first hours of techno in Berlin and a birthplace of the specific sound of the Berlin techno movement. At the turntables, you can practically hear the sounds of the DJs from back then, and this will be followed by a lot more, as the techno movement only continued to grow…
We will discuss the importance of the MayDay party, an event born in Berlin and which some consider as the event which moved techno in Germany to the commercial scene and which has thus made techno surge from the “underground.” Today the MayDay still exists, and it takes place in Dortmund; this is the largest techno festival in Germany, with around 20,000 participants each year. Don’t worry, though, the Berlin club culture tour will show you that the techno scene in Berlin, even after having evolved a lot, manages not only to keep its underground aspect but has not lost anything of it.
Another event has participated in the rise of electronic music worldwide, and helped it to move out of the underground scene. This is of course the Love Parade. We will explore how this urban and saucy carnival began and how it grew from about 100 participants during its first parade in 1989 to reach 1.5 million in 1999, a celebration of happiness in the center of the Berlin streets all because of what was back then a newly born musical scene.
Where will we go during our Berlin techno tour?
Berlin is a huge city and includes a lot of past and present techno locations and clubs. The Berlin techno tour lasts three hours, and we will cover a great number of them during our time together. My goal is for you to discover the very well-known club locations as well as others which are less well-known. Some of the clubs which have marked the Berlin techno scene history have closed forever, and others are really active and probably will be for a long time.
The legendary clubs along our Berlin techno tour
Some of you might have had the chance to dance at the UFO, E-Werk, Planet, Bunker, Ostgut, Bar25, Kater Holzig, or even at TRESOR, when the club was still located on Postdamer Platz. If that’s the case, these are all famous locations and their names probably raise some unforgettable memories in your minds. En route, we will pass the location of Wallfish, Ostgut, Planet, Kater Holzig, and Bar 25. This will allow you to see (or see again) these unusual places, to talk about the history of these clubs, and to see what they have become today. Indeed, like the city of Berlin, its techno scene is in constant evolution.
The famous techno clubs along our Berlin techno tour
Even if some of the most famous techno clubs of the German capital have closed their doors forever, this has not changed anything about the fact that Berlin is one of the best spots worldwide to go if you’re looking to party to the sound of electronic music. The Berlin clubbing scene is located in many unusual spots. You will discover a typical administrative building from the GDR time, two former East German electricity factories, a railway pillar, and an unused factory from the industrial revolution. During the Berlin club culture tour, we will be traveling along the river Spree and its canal. These water areas give a special atmosphere to the clubs which are located there, especially in spring and summer, when people are enjoying outdoor dance floors.
Along the way on our Berlin techno tour, you will be able to located the unmissable techno clubs, like the famous Berghain and its Panorama Bar, the current location of the mythical TRESOR club, the Watergate at the edge of the Spree river, the sulphurous KitKatClub, as well as the Week-End Club, the Suicide Circus, the Club der Visionäre, and many more. If you are looking to go out during your trip to Berlin, my goal is for you to know all of these locations and the atmospheres of the clubs, and to give you the best advice regarding your nightlife experience according to your party desires and the type of music you are looking for.
Extras of the Berlin techno tour
One of the characteristics of the Berlin techno scene is that compared to other European cities or other places in the world, you will be surprised to discover that it is located right in the middle of the city. We will start our Berlin techno tour in the district of Mitte, which means center in German. This characteristic will allow you to enjoy seeing the most famous Berlin monuments during the tour, like the TV-Tower, the Berlin Wall, and the Oberbaum Bridge. Berlin also offers plenty of wonderful street art murals - I will show you some of the best ones during our Berlin techno tour.
Famous Berlin monuments along the Berlin techno tour
You will be traveling in the districts of Mitte, Kreuzberg, and Friedrichshain. This will allow you to see the impressive TV Tower from Alexanderplatz, built in the 70s, which is today one of the most prominent symbols of Berlin. On the Berlin techno tour path, you will walk along the longest still-standing part of the Berlin wall, which was turned into an open air street art gallery since its fall: the East-Side-Gallery. Maybe you know it already, one of the most famous Berlin clubs, the Watergate, is located at the feet of the beautiful Oberbaum Bridge, which we will be crossing.
Street art murals along the Berlin techno tour
Berlin, on top having the reputation of being the capital of techno, is also without a doubt one of the world’s capitals of street art. All the most famous street artists have come here at some point, and do continue to come on a regular base or even live here. They always bring new colors and messages to the Berlin walls. The French artist SOBR is certainly the one who makes the best link between street art and techno, with his project “It’s time to dance”, his cut-outs of dancers (ravers) surrounded by flakes, which are to be seen everywhere in Berlin, especially close by the Berlin techno clubs. During our Berlin techno tour, we will discover some interesting small street art pieces as well as beautiful gigantic murals.
Berlin techno tour revealing side stories and information
During our Berlin club culture tour, I want to put a personal touch to the explanations I give you. Thus, I include some of my experiences that I have had since I began to learn about Berlin. In order to make our Berlin techno tour as lively as possible, I use revealing side stories to best illustrate the locations we are exploring.
Because I do live in Berlin and do so as a tour guide, I know about the many events which are taking place in the city. I try as much as I can to share this local information with you so that you can fully enjoy your Berlin experience. Concerning the techno music, I will pass on to you my best advice concerning the night events, open-air parties, special nights, festivals, etc.
For the Berlin techno tour, you can choose between a walking or bike tour. If you do not have a bike, I propose a comfortable city bike rental. The tour features a coffee break in a typical Berlin location related to the history of the techno scene.
