“Reclaim the streets,” the slogan of street artists!

During my Berlin street art tour, you will admire a great selection of Berlin’s urban art, with a surge of colors and XXL formats. Prepare yourself for masterpieces!

International street artists recognize Berlin as one of the world capitals of urban art. Some of the pieces here are monumental, colorful, and right in the city center. Berliners preserve them lovingly.

I am looking forward to seeing you soon to discover the Berlin street art with you!

Berlin street art tour by Berlin like a local

In this Berlin street art tour, I will select a route that shows you some of the most spectacular Berlin street art murals.

Private Berlin street art tour

Street art is for everyone! It dialogues, reacts, claims, and affirms. It replaces advertising and governmental messages at the street level. Enter the discussion by taking my Berlin street art tour. Come explore and react to the murals. The aim of street art is to interact with Berliners, with artists, and with you. It represents the aesthetic, political, and urban upheavals that mark Berlin and our time. It concerns us.

My private Berlin street art tour is personalized to you. I adapt to your desires, whether you come as amateurs, connoisseurs, or specialists. If this is your first contact with this booming urban art scene, then Berlin will quench your thirst for culture. We will see some of the most famous murals in the world.

If you are already a connoisseur, I will make sure you do not miss any of the essential nuggets in the city. With BERLIN LIKE A LOCAL, you will admire work by international artists and by both native and adopted Berliners.

My Berlin street art tour is also for visual artists, contemporary art critics, and for school or company groups.

Why a Berlin street art tour?

Berlin is the perfect location to explore street art. With its history, the city hosts and attracts the most famous street artists from all around the world. Their work talks to us. There is a large quantity of quality street art in Berlin. Follow the guide to know where to find it, how to understand it, and to make sure you don’t miss any of it.

My Berlin street art tour tells you the story of this city, with all of its twists and turns. The murals are painted on the walls of the city, but street art is in constant evolution. None of the work is fixed. Some pieces are erased, some modified, some painted over – either by the city, its inhabitants, or by the artists themselves. To understand the murals, a small explanation is sometimes necessary: perhaps an image, or a description of what was happening in the neighborhood at the time of the piece’s inception. I bring you the context and all the keys to help you best appreciate the frescoes and other Berlin street art pieces.

During my street art Berlin tour, we will share a look at these committed artistic gestures. Let's explore the colorful traces, struggles, and creativity that are playing out here for the public.

What are we going to talk about during the Berlin street art tour?

Graffiti vs Street Art during your Berlin street art tour

Street art started out illegally. However, it is different from graffiti in the sense that it has the purpose of embellishing the city. Graffiti is provocative. Street art integrates with its environment. Now used in conventional fields, such as advertising, street art has acquired undeniable legitimacy. During my Berlin street art tour, we will see illegal and wild works as well as official and commissioned pieces, and even protected street art, which is unique in the world.

The history and culture of the Berlin street art scene

Abandoned spaces, badlands, cheap rent, and strong counterculture movements: West Berlin has had everything necessary to attract artists and street artists from all around the world since the ‘70s. In November 1989, during the fall of the wall, East Berliners discovered the other side of the wall fully covered with art and graffiti. On their side, the eastern side, it had been grey and untouched since its construction in 1961.

Suddenly, the available space became a playground and the number of artists began to multiply. Street art became a trademark of Berlin's lifestyle, and remains active today. During my Berlin street art tour, we will explore some of the most recent murals along with others from as far back as the ‘90s, which have resisted the evolution of the city. I will also tell you about some of the well-known murals, many of which are now missing works, which have strongly influenced the city.

Techniques used by Berlin urban artists

Stencils, collages, tags, and graffiti, street art uses these and invents its own techniques. The artists must act quickly, often at night, and the creations must be able to withstand the Berlin winter. Artists develop unique techniques to achieve their desired rendering. Here again, be ready for creativity! XXL formats, series, ephemeral or perennial, always at a small cost -- you can appreciate the preparation, the ingenuity, and sometimes even the acrobatics that were necessary to create some of the pieces.

Local and international artists during the Berlin street art tour

The most famous urban artists, like Banksy and Invader, have come to Berlin to express themselves. Are you already familiar with Berlin street art? Then here are some names which should evoke recognition: Nomad, Kripoe, SOBR, El Bocho, 1UP, Vhils, Thierry Noir, Alice Pasquini, BLU, Shephard Farey, Vrubel, and many more...

During my Berlin street art tour, you will see murals from Berliners, Berliner-based artists, and international artists alike.

Where will we go during our Berlin street art tour?

Street art is present in every district of the city. This is part of the specificity of Berlin. I will choose a route for you that allows you to grasp its importance and see a wide variety of works while walking or cycling through the various neighborhoods of the German capital.

Berlin street art tour around Alexanderplatz

Our Berlin street art tour starts at Alexanderplatz, which will be our meeting point. A must-see place in Berlin, there are many urban art pieces to see there, however, they still must be sought after to be found. Kripoe, SOBR, Taosuz, Kam & Laurene, El Bocho. Between the Hackescher Markt and Janovitzbrücke S-Bahn stations, you will see pieces from some of Berlin's best-known and most prolific figures. Since I run this Berlin street art tour, I have to adapt to the new work that appears regularly. This is characteristic of urban art, and is part of what makes it so enjoyable. Scattered all around the Berlin district of Mitte, most of the pieces here are illegal and small. Techniques, humor, politics, and poetry: you will see immediately the excitement offered by the local street art scene.

Urban art on the banks of the river Spree

We will explore the banks of the Spree River. A new venue, the Holzmarkt25, opened in May 2017.

The Berlin alternative scene negotiated this location patiently with the city officials. It offers an incredible haven of relaxation, a collaborative spirit, and an ecological and festive atmosphere, all in the heart of Berlin. With its open and modern architecture and collaborative principles, the venue offers us a new economic model. Street art is fully integrated and is part of the project, with monumental murals by Cranio and WE.N.U., among others. We will see here some of the most recent Berlin XXL frescoes.

In the same neighborhood, the YAAM is also a landmark venue for party and urban art in Berlin. Other monumental works unfold here, and in particular, a piece by the famous Portuguese artist Vhils, whose preservation is under discussion at the moment.

On the other side of the river Spree, a residential residence greets you, looking normal at first. It is in fact also the fruit of a collective and collaborative economic model. Who are the initiators of these projects? How did they manage to invest in such a central location in the city? We will talk about all of this, with the works of street artists as our backdrop.

Visit the East Side Gallery during the Berlin street art tour

The East Side Gallery in Friedrichshain is a must-see. It is the longest preserved section of the Berlin wall accessible to the public. Artists from around the world were invited in the early ‘90's to express themselves on this 1.3 km (1 mile) long portion of the wall. We will stop here during our Berlin street art tour in front of a selection of the most interesting or iconic pieces.

We will also go through a collaborative garden. Beehives, healthy food, and innumerable edible plant crops all come together in an open-air organic supermarket for Berliners. Of course, a large-format fresco looks over it in its entirety. Here we will be entering the district of Kreuzberg, where many older works of street art are steeped in history.

Berlin street art tour in Kreuzberg

Kreuzberg, a well-known Berlin district, is sprinkled with graffiti and urban art. Sometimes, you just have to know where to look up to see it. Many pieces here are from the origins of street art in Berlin. Between Kottbuser Tor and Schlessiches Tor, we will look at work that represents the ‘80s and the end of the cold war. Their messages still resonate today. The artist BLU has here realized a mural with a very singular fate. I take videos that show the evolution of his painting and explain everything. This work requires a guide for it to be decrypted. Others are simply striking: ecology, politics, sharing, science, celebration. I’ll tell you what I see. You too?

The extras of our Berlin street art tour

I want to make our Berlin street art tour as lively as possible by telling you some local stories that illustrate the places we are visiting.

En route, you will have the opportunity to admire some of the most famous monuments of the city, such as the magnificent Oberbaum bridge that unites the districts of Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain, the Berlin wall or the 368-meter-high television tower, today one of the most prominent symbols of Berlin.

During my guided Berlin street art tour, I can also give you my best advice relating to your desires for restaurants, bars, and outings. After the tour, if you would like to continue exploring urban art and artists, do not hesitate to ask me for a complete list of the works which you will have had the opportunity to discover.

Finally, I propose that you set aside 3 hours for taking my Berlin street art tour either by walking or cycling. The tour includes a coffee break.
